The arcade shoot-em-up genre of yesteryear has made its way to Virtual Reality and Steam. Neon is a “non-violent arcade-style shoot-em-up” for the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality VR platforms, and releases today on Steam.

The premise of the game is simple –

To pay off your life debts you’ve been uploaded to one of the millions of nano-workbots in the sun’s core to prevent solar flares by breaking down neon isotopes.

In full VR, you will control an ion cannon in a 360-degree environment affected by gravity, shooting positive and negative ions at neon isotopes to eliminate them.

Neon was created to feel like an 80’s arcade shooter in full VR, with vector polygonal lines and surfaces illuminated by pulsating neon lighting with immersive 360-degree action. Each of the 42 levels was also created to require a different solution to achieving the best times. The difficulty slowly ramps up as you play, making it easier for beginner VR users to get a feel for it, while also providing a challenge for VR veterans.

The levels also change over time to add elements such as stronger gravity, different isotopes (with different charges associated with them) and boss levels that require unique strategies to succeed. Like in the arcade classics, Neon provides power-ups like slow-mo and shockwave to add to the crazy fun.

Check out the trailer above for Neon, and go take a look at the Steam Store page if you’re interested in some nostalgia-driven VR action.
