Today Atari and developer Wayforward announced that a new version of the classic centipede franchise would be hitting stores later this year. Centipede: Infestation will be released on the Nintendo Wii and 3DS.

The game promises to be quiet different than it’s predecessors. It will boast a darker tone, with a post-apocalyptic environment it will share elements of a rough and tough shooter as well as a tower-defense game. The player will take the role of an orphaned teen boy named Max who is tasked with surviving in a wasteland over-run by mutated giant bugs. It’s his goal to help bring back plant life and save the world.

Sounds pretty simple, right?

Well the game is a bit more complicated than that. It will host seven different environments expanding forty stages. Each of which will be overrun with giant bugs and obstacles but with a little help from some powerful weapons Max should be able to survive. Two weapons have been revealed so far, one being the Lightning Orb Gun and the other the Nuke Cannon. Both of which promise to levy massive damage towards the likes of human eating beetles, scavenging spiders, and massive moth behemoths.

Being a Wayforward developed game, a studio notable for creating Contra 4, Centipede: Infestation will feature a co-op multiplayer mode. It’s also been reported that the 3DS version of the game will include some kind of “content” sharing capability across handhelds while boasting Streetpass support.

We have some time before the game hits. So in the meantime check out the official announcement trailer for Centipede: Infestation that hit earlier today:
