Oddworld: Soulstorm Announced for 2017

Oddworld

The last proper Oddworld-related release was Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath back in 2005. Since then, it has been released on virtually every platform under the sun. Since 2014, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! was put on multiple platforms, acting as a completely redone version of Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey. The team at Oddworld Inhabitants is now looking to release Oddworld: Soulstorm to the masses in the latter half of 2017.

The game picks up where New ‘n’ Trasty left off, but from a different perspective than Abe’s Exoddus – the sequel to Abe’s Odyssey. A lot of the plot description sounds pretty similar to the story of Abe’s Exoddus but there also isn’t much known about Soulstorm other than that it will tell a “deeper, darker, and more sinister story“, according to series creator Lorne Lanning. Soulstorm Brewery was a large component of Abe’s Exoddus and the hints towards their inclusion in the new Oddworld title was started prior to today’s announcement with a seemingly normal tweet on March 10th:

The game will be co-developed by internal teams of Oddworld Inhabitants, as well as Frima Studio in Canada. If this truly is just a remake of Abe’s Exoddus but from a different perspective, than it was actually confirmed back in 2015 when Oddworld Inhabitants announced they were remaking the original game from the ground up. It seems likely this is the case, but nothing has been explicitly said whether or not it is the same project. Perhaps two Oddworld titles are being developed simultaneously?

Currently, fans who want to see more of what Abe will look like in the game can follow Oddworld on Twitter. If they reach enough followers, they will release images of Abe’s hands, chest and face, with his hands almost ready to be revealed. One other piece of news regarding the game came out which was that Jim Sterling, who previously lent his voice to Volume, will have a “vocal role” in Oddworld: Soulstorm.

I for one loved my time with Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, and am very much excited to see what Soulstorm ends up being. Do you think it will be a retelling of Abe’s Exoddus? Let us know which Oddworld game you’d like to see remade, or if you’re tired of the remakes, down in the comments below.
