The Definitive Edition will have players returning to the stunning, immersive, and heart-achingly poignant world of Ori and the Blind Forest with a host of new features which complement the original world fans have come to know and love.

One of the new additions is an expanded theater mode, which will not only showcase the cut-scenes from the game but also feature concept art, trailers, and more behind-the-scenes content.

There’s also a new playable area, called Black Root Burrows, which will give players a further look into the lore of the game:  “There is a great story sequence throughout Black Root Burrows where you’re discovering the past of Naru, the mother character,” explains Executive Producer Mark Coates, “You discover her roots, where she came from, and you learn a bit more about her as a character and why maybe she is compelled to do some of the things that she does later on in the game. It’s all interwoven with the already-existing story.”

With this new story, material players will also be getting new abilities and ways to solve puzzles, navigate and explore the environment, and outsmart enemies. For instance, there’s a new dash ability which can be leveled up so it can do damage and eventually even be performed while mid-air.

The new environment, while as gorgeous as we’ve come to expect, is still dangerous. As the player braves the new area and discovers more about the world, they will gain the Light Burst ability, which has been described as a sort of ‘light grenade’. The Light Burst will be useful not only against enemies, but also in solving puzzles as well.

These new abilities are both found in Black Root Burrows, but have been balanced and implemented for use throughout the rest of the game.

Another addition to the Definitive Edition is a new “easy” mode for players who want to have an easier time with challenges and platforming in order to focus more on the narrative. On the other side, the “hard” mode will, of course, offer more of a challenge, and if players are especially brave and confident they might try the “one-life” mode.
