PaRappa the Rapper, the charming PlayStation One rhythm game is coming to the PS4 in 2017, in a glorious HD remaster. At the PlayStation Experience, it was announced that the remaster would be coming, alongside PSP classics LocoRoco and Patapon. The game is celebrating its 20th anniversary and what better way to celebrate than with a beautiful remake. PaRappa will be remastered in HD, and will also feature native 4K support on PS4 Pro.
The game will also feature a number of other improvements. One of which is entitled “Feel the Beat”, which uses the Dualshock 4 controller to provide a metronome that helps signal to the player when they need to rap in response to the other characters in the level. “See the Beat” enlarges the player icon when they are rapping, to help give visual feedback while they are playing. There is a demo available now on the Playstation Store, so players can give the first level of PaRappa a try, and experience the upgrades themselves.
The other two games that will be available potentially came as a shock to many, as Patapon and LocoRoco have been titles that have been dormant the last few years. Other than being available as downloads on the PlayStation Vita as PSP Classics, the games have not been a priority for Sony it seems. With the remake of PaRappa the Rapper however, it makes sense that Sony remasters the other two titles, as both have similar vibrant, 2d styles. LocoRoco is a sidescroller where you manipulate the level by using the shoulder buttons instead of directly controlling your LocoRoco. Patapon is a rhythm game primarily, where the player acts as a deity, controlling an army of patapon and using rhythm gameplay to combat enemies.
Fans of Sony’s quirkier games are definitely in for a treat in 2017, and hopefully as long as PaRappa the Rapper, Patapon and LocoRoco sell well, we may see some more welcome remasters from Sony’s catalogue.
