Peter Molyneux Reveals “22 Experiments”

When Peter Molyneux, creator of the Fable series left LionHead Studios and Microsoft in March of 2012, the gaming community was surprised. The departure has freed Molyneux to create 22 Cans. Molyneux has announced that his studio will be releasing a series of 22 “experiments” over the next few months which will eventually culminate into a “final project.”

While speaking at the Imperial College London’s Games and Media Event, Molyneux stated that he hoped to release the first of the experiments in “about six weeks.” He did not give any indication onto which platform(s) the experiments would land. In fact he didn’t say much about what shape 22 Experiments will take beyond hints at a more general creative vision.

“Our whole passion [at 22 Cans] is to use some of the technology which is around in the world today in a single product and a single experience, in a way that no one else has used it,” he said. “I am fed up to the back teeth of consuming other people’s visions – of directors’ and screenwriters’ ideas of what a hero should be; of novelists writing stories that they think are good, but I think are rubbish. Why can’t we have stories about me? I want to have my own unique experiences.”

He also cautions anyone reading his words to not “take what I’ve said too literally.” Whatever 22 Experiments is, it’s “more subtle” than, as Molyneux describes it, “a storybook called ‘whatever your name is.'”

“I love this one thought, and I have experimented with this in previous games, that you find out more about yourself while being engaged with this experience than [you would] with anything else,” Molyneux added. “And we all love finding out about ourselves – whether it’s through personality tests, or someone turning around to you and saying X, Y and Z.”
