PlayStation 5 At Least Three Years Away

PlayStation 4, Sony

Many outlets have already covered that the PlayStation 4 is nearing its end. However, there is some good news to come out of this. According to some, the PlayStation 5 is on its way. The news comes courtesy of industry consultant Serkan Toto.

Mr. Toto translated an interview John Kodera had with Bloomberg Japan. While Sony hasn’t commented outside of this, Mr. Kodera’s comments should be seen as somewhat of a comment on the next console. According to Mr. Toto:

While he doesn’t use the word ‘PS5’, Kodera says (again) the PS4 entered the final stage of its lifecycle and that Sony will spend the next three years “preparing for the future.

Sony originally said during a Corporate Strategy Meeting that they were winding down production of the PS4. However, that doesn’t mean that they are stopping production. The console is expected to sell well, but profits will reduce over the next two to three years. This means that Sony needs to focus on other aspects of the business.

As some further important context, Kodera was talking to investors and analysts about the health and viability of the PS4 as a platform. This year is expected to see a three million until dropping in sales for the PS4 compared to last year.

PlayStation Vita

However, this isn’t the only news to come out of the interview. Mr. Kodera is also focusing on the PlayStation Vita.  As Mr. Toto notes:

In an interview with Bloomberg Japan, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Kodera says his company ‘considers various options around the PS Vita’ again. This comes after his predecessor House said last fall that portable gaming is not a big market.

This is good news for PlayStation fans. However, it should be noted that it isn’t confirmation of an actual release date for the PlayStation 5.
