PlayStation App Coming to iOS/Andoid Devices Alongside PS4 Launch

A new PlayStation App will be available for download on iOS and Android devices when the PlayStation 4 launches next month, Sony has announced.

The device, which will be free, allows users to stay in touch with the people on their friends’ list, compare Trophies and see what friends are up to while they’re online. The PlayStation Blog will also be accessible via the app.

When approached by the PlayStation Blog to discuss the app, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida had the following to say:

“There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile and send messages — even voice messages — to friends between your smartphone and PS4. A friend on PS4 can also send out an invitation for a multiplayer game, which you can then check on the App, and you can also purchase PS4 games from PlayStation Store. Your game will immediately start downloading while you’re away.”

The app will also support second screen gameplay for specific titles. One example given was when Yoshida, during the Sony TGS event, drew a picture of Knack (from the PS4 launch title of the same name) on his phone’s touchscreen and then pushed it to his PS4 that was running The Playroom and the bot characters began to interact with it.

More details regarding the PlayStation App are set to be shared as we get closer to launch, but for now, this seems like something I’ll use with my PS4 system. Let’s hope it’s compatible with both smartphone and tablets, because I can never get enough use out of my iPad.
