Yesterday Sony held a live-stream focussing on upcoming titles for the PlayStation Vita, a competitor to Nintendo’s 3DS which many gamers believe has the potential to be something amazing but simply hasn’t had enough titles produced for it.

To help sales of the failing handheld jump up a gear however, Hiroshi Kawano (Boss of Sony Japan) announced during this live-stream that the PlayStation Vita will have its price cut from 24,980 Yen to 19,980 Yen. This price of just under 20,000 Yen roughly translates as around £139.00 and is in regards to the Wi-Fi only version of the handheld although the 3G version also had its price cut.

The company also announced that Japanese Vita owners will get a free week of PlayStation plus which also grants access, as with PlayStation Plus on the PS3, to games, one being Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

In comparison in Japan, the Vita is now 1080 Yen more expensive than the Nintendo 3DS XL. Hopeful that European/US gamers could see a similar price cut in their territories our source, Eurogamer, contacted Sony which a spokesperson stated:

“The price cut announced today is for the SCE Japan region only. We have nothing to announce at this time regarding pricing within the our own region.”
