Project CARS is raced to just about every current-gen system since its release earlier this month, but it looks like it’ll take a bit longer to park itself on Wii U after some serious technical issues plaguing the slick motor-sport racer.

Upon inquiry, Slightly Mad Studio’s Ian Bell admitted that he and his team were having some difficulties getting the game to run at as polished of a level on Nintendo’s HD console than its newer peers.

Project CARS is reportedly running at “23 fps” at a 720p resolution – specs that Bell’s none too pleased with and neither is his studio. He conceded that launching the game on Wii U as planned might require some sacrifices on the part of the game’s graphics than its gameplay if it can be helped.

“We could reach a fairly solid 30FPS but it might take a hell of a lot of work,” he says. “On the other hand, about halfway through us finishing, Nintendo might announce a new console (I have zero knowledge on this BTW but I’ve heard ‘rumours’). Our work might just be the best thing that ever hit that new console in the driving sim genre.”

In the wake of these troubles, Bell alludes to Nintendo’s much-hinted at NX game platform as a more viable alternative for Project CARS should Slightly Mad Studios not be able to implement an acceptable solution to the game’s performance.”Honestly, unless we really cut the looks back I think we’re looking to Nintendo’s next console,” he further writes. The NX, which was teased earlier this year, won’t be fully revealed until later next year.

Originally released worldwide May 7th for Playstation 4, Xbox One, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Steam OS for PC, Project CARS offers players a change to get behind the wheel of an ultra-realistic driving simulator with dynamic weather effects at 1080p and 60 frames-per-second. The game has yet to be released on Wii U and might just take a while longer if these reports are any indication
