Perhaps one of the most pleasant surprises to happen at Paris Games Week is the release of the teaser trailer for Quantic Dream’s new project, Detroit: Become Human. The project is a sort of follow-up to a tech demo called Kara, which was released by Quantic Dream about three years ago.

In the demo, Kara, an Android, starts to experience human emotions and thought process, which leads to her nearly being dismantled. However, pity is taken on her after she begs to be allowed to live, so she is reassembled and prepared to be shipped out and sold.

After the demo was released there was quite the demand for further development with Kara’s story, as it was so empathetic and moving to witness a being who simply wanted to be allowed to live and feel.

With that said, yesterday’s teaser trailer was a huge source of excitement and anticipation for those of us who’ve been waiting so long to find out what happened to Kara once she left the factory.

Detroit will take place in the not-too distant future where Androids have been invented and are now changing the very fabric of society. Quantic Dream didn’t want to do another AI story, but instead chose to have Detroit ask the questions of what it means to be human. How would we as people react if what we had created began to have thoughts and emotions of their own; What it would be like to be an Android experiencing all of this first-hand?

Quantic Dream is well-known for their emotional power-houses with state-of-the-art motion capture and graphic design, such as Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. With any luck, Detroit will follow in the emotional footsteps of its predecessors and deliver a high-quality performance of interactive gameplay, and an impactful story.

Detroit does not yet have a release date, but it will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive title when it is released.
