After a couple days of teases which were not that subtle, Rockstar has finally confirmed that yes, they are working on a sequel to Red Dead Redemption. In fact, it will be released in Fall 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One, and be called Red Dead Redemption 2. The confirmation comes from their social media accounts and a press release with very little info. A trailer will be released this Thursday at 11 AM EST. You can find the official tweet below:

An excerpt from the press release implies that this will be a heavily online experience:

“Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland. The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience.”

This also falls in line with the image of seven individuals that is very reminiscent of Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. Sam Houser states that this will be a “living world” and it’s not surprising based on the success which GTA Online has had. Plus, making a western for people to play with together is just a good idea all around.

As I said, this follows a string of teases that began Sunday when Rockstar posted a new logo drenched in Red. It was hard not to figure out it was Red Dead-related in some capacity. However, it could have been a tease for a re-release of last generation’s Red Dead Redemption. The release of another tease yesterday proved that this was going to be a new Red Dead game. Even today, Rockstar registered a domain for “Red Dead Online”.

Perhaps the most surprising things from this announcement are the lack of a PC announcement, and the game being called Red Dead Redemption 2. Most would have assumed that the game would take on a new moniker since Red Dead Revolver had a different name too. However, the two games were stylistically pretty different meaning Red Dead Redemption 2 may just fall so in line with its predecessor’s mechanics and aesthetics that they decided to just number it.

The lack of a PC release is only surprising knowing that Grand Theft Auto V and other Rockstar titles have made their way to PC lately. The exception of course is that the original Red Dead Redemption has not. Perhaps this is the series that will never see the light of day on PC.

Regardless, we’ll know more when the trailer is released later this week at Rockstar’s official site. Are you excited for Red Dead Redemption 2? Let us know what you’re looking forward to most in the comments below.
