Road Rash Co-Designer Shows Interest in Returning to Series

Road Rash co-designer Dan Geisler has expressed interest in returning to the series with the creation of a new game.

Road Rash, originally released on the Sega Megadrive in 1991, combined motorcycle racing with on-bike combat which allowed the player to knock opponents off their bikes via the use of feet, fists, clubs, or a well-timed nudge into an oncoming car. While the original game was popular and successful enough to warrant several sequels, there has been no new release in the series since 1999.

But now, while posting on Reddit, Geisler expressed interest in creating a new game in the series, with Kickstarter being a potential funding method if he believes there is enough interest from gamers.

Speaking of the series, Geisler said, “It hasn’t resurfaced because I was burned out after Road Rash 3. But I’m ready to do another one now. I just needed 20 years off.”

“I’m ready to make a better one now,” Geisler continued. “I miss playing it too. If there is enough interest, I’ll do a Kickstart on it.”

The major problem with this proposal is that the rights to Road Rash are still owned by Electronic Arts, something which Geisler noted: “Road Rash was my baby. I will need to talk with EA to get the rights.”

One potential compromise is for Geisler to create more of a spiritual successor to the series rather than a new entry, something he already seems aware of, stating that he doesn’t think EA “have a lock on motorcycle combat any more.”
