Rocket League: Collector’s Edition Announced

The ludicrously entertaining, high-octane Indie sport mixer Rocket League was easily one of the most enjoyable releases of 2015. In the following months, the game has steadily climbed in popularity and availability, with difficult yet enjoyable gameplay that is easily learned and improved upon. Three DLC packages have been released for the game thus far, and more have been promised in the form of Rocket League: Collector’s Edition for PC and console.

Rocket League was digitally released for the first time on the Xbox Live Marketplace early last month, and the announcement for the Collector’s Edition soon followed. Originally released on Steam and PSN, the digital download alone has sold over 4 million units to over 12 million players worldwide. The soccer-like Indie hit also boasts a huge (and active) community of players and fans.

The exclusive contract to publish a physical copy was scooped up by 505 Games, a global publisher and member of the Digital Bros Group. Dave Hagewood (CEO and Studio Director of Psyonix) seemed positive about the release, saying, “505 Games are a proven entity in taking digital brands like Terraria and PAYDAY, and breaking them out, through their long-established retail partnerships and on-the-ground expertise, to a whole new consumer-base worldwide.” While the quote may lead some to accuse Psyonix of double-dipping, it does bring promise that the release will be done tastefully, to (hopefully) follow in the footsteps of other great releases such as Sniper Elite.

The Collector’s Edition will feature the full game, the three previously released DLC packages, and new, additional content that will likely be retail-only. No confirmation has been made to whether or not the DLC released with the Collector’s Edition will be available to those who purchased the game digitally, but the edition itself will be available to all next-gen gamers on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is expected to be released at participating retailers in Q3, 2016.
