Rumor: Marvel’s Spider-man Will Star A New Lead

You may have heard a number of rumors regarding Spider-man earlier this week, but the biggest one thus far asks just who might be playing the wall-crawler next time around.

In the string of leaks allegedly obtained by hackers throughout the past few days from the inner workings of Sony Pictures, it’s been recently revealed that both it and the Disney-owned Marvel Studios have fervently discussed bringing Spider-man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a significant role.

The two studios were purportedly close to sealing a deal of some sorts – and might be still, but rumor has it that pressure from the higher ups at Sony Pictures’ parent company could mean that a renewed discussion of the cross-over might very well take Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield out of the equation.

The Latino Review claims that should Marvel buy the rights to the blockbuster superhero’s film franchise, it would not be inclined to grant creative control of Spider-Man to Sony, much less honor the contracts with Sony’s Spider-Stars. This would include Andrew Garfield and Sally Field, who remain the sole cast members of director Marc Webb’s reboot to be contracted for two more movies.

“IF the Marvel/Sony deal were to go forward,” says LR, “Andrew Garfield would no longer be Peter Parker and any baggage from existing films, [directors Sam] Raimi or [Marc] Webb, would be non-canonical.”

The site adds that the rumored Aunt May solo film and Female Character Spider-Man team-up movie were concepts that Marvel Studios “severely disliked.” By all accounts, Marvel’s specific vision for a Spider-man movie would “focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story,” much like director Sam Rami’s original Spider-man trilogy.

Additionally, these sources say that Spider-Man would make his debut in the Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War (an item that Sony and Marvel had discussed prior to their initial talks breaking down, could still happen and would potentially see Spider-man fulfill a similar role in the superhero conflict as he did in the classic comic book story-arc of the same name. It’s unknown whether a stuntman in a Spider-man costume would suffice for a number of action scenes, or if a new actor would be required to play the character’s Peter Parker persona as well.

We liked The Amazing Spider-man 2 more than most, or at least more than its game, but we want to hear your thoughts on the matter. What would you think of a new Spider-man gracing the silver screen alongside Ironman and Captain America? Who would you like to see don the mask?

We’ll keep you posted on the ongoing Spider-man debacle as it develops. Stay tuned to that and more right here at BagoGames.
