Rumor: THQ Clears 2014 Release Titles, Preps Company for Sale

Rumors heard around the internet are that THQ has canceled their entire 2014 line-up and preparing the company for sale.

Kevin Dent, gaming industry veteran, tweeted that THQ had canceled an MMO that was being developed under license from The Games Workshop, meaning Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online. Dent continued by saying the publisher had also canceled all projects that were to be released in 2014 and had begun returning intellectual property to their licensors.

The reason for the return of intellectual property, according to Dent, is to prepare the company for an impending sale. “I am hearing everything (in 2014 is canceled), they need to preserve cash,” he said. THQ’s stock price sits at about 66 cents. Last year at this time it was hovering around $6.

Games that THQ publishes under license include the Warhammer 40,000 series, WWE and UFC lines, Red Faction and Saint’s Row.

THQ’s chief spokesperson issued a statement denying the rumor that the 2014 projects have been canceled:

“THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids’ boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry.”
