Rumor Time: Final Fantasy Versus XIII Not Happening?

Kotaku has reported that, according to sources, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is no longer happening—meaning the game has been quietly killed off. The title itself was announced in 2006 but had failed to make any appearances at recent gaming shows and had very little information regarding a release, leading to some suspicion around its progress. The decision to kill it off without much noise was done to avoid damaging Square Enix’s stock prices.

In March of this year though, Tetsuya Nomura, designer for the title stated to Famitsu, “We’re almost done with preparing the latest info for the game. Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released.”

Then in May, speaking to Game Informer, he remarked, “We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated.”

Other sources apparently mentioned to Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII‘s assets have actually been redirected towards the next FF title, a possible FFXV but this is unconfirmed at the moment.

When asked by Kotaku for a comment regarding the status of FInal Fantasy Versus XIII, Square Enix replied, “We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.” The company has an FF event scheduled for the end of August/early September, so perhaps more light will be shed on the game’s status then.
