So I posted an introduction of myself in class today, explaining that I am pursuing a career in game journalism. A classmate responded, “Do you see yourself perhaps seeking out more “important” news as you age?” The following is what my fingers said to him:
Thanks, (Name).

Unfortunately, there is a common misconception regarding the “importance” of gaming. The human race has always felt a need for respite from the daily world by using recreational activities. As we get further into the information age, we can now take those recreational activities of mind and body to as high a level as technology can offer. As technology grows and we as a species become smarter and more connected, gaming begins to be viewed as not only a recreational activity, but as a learning tool and an artform as well. Also, it has been scientifically proven that gaming (not in excess) provides human beings with physical and mental resiliences that can improve health and lengthen life. There was a time when rock and roll was questionably “important” as well. As times change, so too do people. If we look at gaming with a more open mind as to its positive effects and its place as an art form, so will the representation of game journalism be viewed in a better light. Unfortunately, many of gaming cultures’ representatives in the public eye are a bit aloof and seemingly immature. It should be their job to promote the positive perception of such a wonderful and intelligent culture, as well. I hope to be that type of journalist.
