Nintendo 3DS Direct: New Updates & Games Announced

Yesterday’s Nintendo 3DS Direct revealed the release plans for the fun, handheld console.

Among many of the announced games, came some new info for famous franchises, especially for Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing. A few Wii U games are being ported to the Nintendo 3DS: Super Mario Maker and Yoshi’s Wooly WorldPikmin will also be coming to 3DS, which is a rare sight as it is often console-exclusive.

Super Mario Maker / Nintendo

Super Mario Maker for the 3DS includes medal objectives, and the ability for players to collaborate with levels online. Instead of the Wii U’s idea of using the global community of players to share and play through each others’ levels, the 3DS version is focusing on local play. Players will be able to share completed courses with each other locally and through StreetPass. Super Mario Maker for the 3DS is launching this December!

Poochy and Yoshi’s Wooly World will have 3DS exclusive new stages and the ability for Yoshi to us little adorable Poochies to complete levels. This game will be released sometime in 2017.

Pikmin for the 3DS will also be released in 2017. The official title was not given during today’s direct.

Nintendo 3DS’s Mii Plaza Update lets players have up to 100 Streetpass Tags before reading through messages, unlike the previous 10 tag limit. Also, Nintendo is adjusting the wait time in Mii Plaza by offering quicker loading times in a separate Plaza.

The beloved Animal Crossing: New Leaf will have an extra special update available this Christmas Season. The update will allow players to use the Animal Crossing Amiibo and Amiibo cards in the game. The new cards will be on sale in stores beginning December 2 (they will make great stocking stuffers for 3DS owners). A specific Nintendo Direct will be aired later this Fall and will discuss the update in greater detail.

Wind Waker Amiibo / Nintendo

Also on December 2, a new wave of Legend of Zelda Amiibo will release in stores in honor of the series’ 30th Anniversary! Wind Waker Toon Link and Zelda, 8-Bit Link and Ocarina of Time Link will act as their regular Amiibo counterparts. However, these new Amiibo will have special functions in next year’s Breath of the Wild game. In case these Amiibo aren’t enough for hardcore collectors to look forward to, a collaboration with Dark Horse Comics is producing three Legend of Zelda books. The one spoken about today in the Direct, is all about the breathtaking art and ingenious artifacts from the LoZ series.
