Shadow of the Tomb Raider looks remarkable by all accounts. However, it’s not just beautiful. It’s realistic too. That’s according to a behind the scenes look from the developers. According to Eidos Montreal’s technical artist Martin Palko, the studio wanted everything to be as realistic as possible.

The developer released a new video in its ongoing series looking at Shadow of the Tomb Raiders‘ team. The series also looks at a lot of the game’s visuals. This video focused on the fire and water effects/simulation. In it, Mr. Palko said realism was extremely important for the team.

Temperature in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

In terms of colors, the team even went so far as to measure the temperature of the heat in-game. Color changes depending on the heat. However, it’s not exactly fantasy physics. The team used real-world scientific methodology in order to determine how flames should act and look.

Realism wasn’t just limited to flames. Even oil floating on water was subject to a lot of testing and that testing was for a single scene, which goes to show how far the team went to ensure the entire game was as accurate as possible. As Mr. Palko explains:

“One of our main goals is to be realistic.and we use a lot of real world physical formulas in the game. For the fire, we actually measure the temperature of the flame and generate the colour based on that. There’s a scene where Lara’s wading through a pool of water that has oil floating on the surface. We did a lot of work to make that oil very believable, including the sheen and the colour separation on the top of it.”
