The upcoming movie based on a block-based Minecraft video game will be directed by Shawn Levy. Levy is mostly known for his lukewarm light comedies that include The Pink Panther, Cheaper by the Dozen and Night at the Museum. That doesn’t sound like Warner Brothers is all the focused on this production given the hand-off to such a director, but they’re probably too busy focusing on Harry Potter, LEGO and a dozen DC Comics movies they’re currently producing. Even with the project is being produced by Roy Lee of The LEGO Movie fame, this almost sounds like a throw-away project just for the marketing tie-in that may just end up getting tossed into theaters as a Spring release. I can already see the general public looking down on such a movie claiming it to be a low-rent cash-in on The LEGO Movie.
The movie is still in the very early stages of production though. Chances are it could be a rare success for Levy. We’ll just have to wait and see as no actors or writers are currently attached. We’re still not even completely sure the film will be CG or live-action.
