No Shazam in the Justice League Movie?

So with apparently every superhero being introduced in Warner Brothers’ upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it doesn’t seem like too much a stretch that Captain Marvel/Shazam would show up? Considering the character has his own movie coming up (with Dwayne Johnson playing his nemesis Black Adam) and does play a bigger role in DC Comics as of lately, one might think he’ll be getting the same star treatment as Wonder Woman and Aquaman. But now it seems as though Shazam will not only be excluded from Batman V Superman, the forth coming Justice League movie as well. Why? The Shazam movie is being produced under New Line instead of Warner Brothers making it less likely for a crossover. It’s for sure a guarantee that the character is out of the connected DC cinematic universe so there’s still some hope…I hope.

At least Toby Emmerich of New Line ensured Entertainment Weekly in an interview that the movie will be more fun and less grim:

It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.

[Shazam] will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real. … Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.

So while I’m a bit saddened that Shazam won’t join up with the League, I’m much more excited for this film now knowing that it’ll be outside the range of DC’s supposed no-funny-stuff superhero universe. The character in question is Billy Batson, a 10-year-old boy who gains the power to transform into the magically heroic Captain Marvel by shouting the word “SHAZAM!” You gotta have a little fun with a concept like that.

No official word on who will be playing the lead role.

Source: EW
