Sin is one of those 90’s FPS’s that sadly got kind of overshadowed when it came out in 1998. It had the misfortune of coming out around the same time as an FPS called Half-Life. And while Half-Life eventually became the more popular shooter, Sin has amassed quite the cult following over the years.

The original game follows the exploits of Colonel John R. Blade of HardCorps, a freelance police force in the city of Freeport. Taking place in a fictional 2037, John is sent in to capture a crimelord who robbed Freeport City Bank. He soon finds out that more is going on in the city’s seedy underbelly than he could ever imagine. A lot of it involving the brilliant and beautiful biotech scientist Elexis Sinclaire.

A full sequel was planned for the game, called Sin: Episodes. Much like Half-Life 2’s episodes, it was planned as an episodic release. Though only a single episode, “Emergence”, was ever released before the series developer Ritual Entertainment was bought out, putting a permanent end to the franchise.

New Features and Fixes

While the original game has been available on Steam for quite a while already, as a bonus to those who bought Sin Episodes, this Steam release has left a lot to be desired. And this is what Nightdive Studios has remedied with their release of Sin Gold, which replaces the original Steam release of the game.

The Sin Gold update adds the Wages Of Sin expansion, which was previously missing from the Steam release. Modernized Steam Master Server support has also been added. A game editor has also been restored. And most importantly, the game now supports proper 16:9 widescreen resolutions.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg of fixes to the original Steam release, which now runs better than it ever has. A ton of original assets have been restored or uncensored. And the game’s maximum framerate has been limited to keep the game from running too fast on modern systems, an issue that previously plagued the game on modern PC’s.

Upcoming Remasters

However, this does not seem to be all that Nightdive has planned for the game. A full on remaster in their Kex engine is stated to be coming late 2020 or early 2021. Nightdive has already done a lot of great work with their remasters of Forsaken, Blood and Turok 2, so this is definitely something to look forward to.

And this is not all, Nightdive are also working on a remaster of the game Shadowman. This coupled with the upcoming Blade Runner remaster and System Shock remaster means we have a lot of good stuff coming from Nightdive in the near future. It’s a good time to be an oldschool gamer for sure.

Sin Gold is currently available on Steam, and owners of the original game will already have received it for free. So now might be a good time to go back to 1998 and frag some punks.

Cheers to PC Gamer for providing the info.
