Activision has announced that their children-targeted Skylanders franchise has made more money than any other game franchise at this point in the year. For those not familiar with the series, users purchase a starter pack with the game and a ‘portal’ to use their characters which come in the form of action figures that, when placed on the portal device, are put into the game as playable characters. Additional characters can be bought in booster sets, similar to how trading cards are sold.

With little in the way of big releases so far, in 2012, one can see how a game such as this could surpass all competition. Activision has declined to release the actual sales figure at this point, though they had released that it had produced over $100 million in the first quarter alone, back in March.

Needless to say, there are more Skylanders games on the horizon and Activision will likely squeeze this money sponge for all it’s worth.
