Smite: Battlegrounds of the Gods is Heading to PS4

Smite, Hi-Rez Studios

Smite is one of the most popular MOBAs on the market, and it has just been announced that it is coming to the PS4. The game, developed by Hi-Rez Studios, has been out for some time on PC and since last summer on Xbox One, and they have cited “frequent requests by the community” as reasoning behind the upcoming release. In a post today on the games site they revealed that closed alpha testing was beginning today, with a closed beta to launch in March.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Smite runs like many traditional MOBAs, where teams of players controlling mythical gods face off against each other in a variety of modes. Where other MOBAs like DOTA and League of Legends have top-down views, Smite has been different in that it has a camera situated behind the players character, the influence being seen in upcoming MOBAs like Battleborn and Overwatch. This style of control makes it ideal for consoles according to the developers, and part of why it will finally be coming to PS4.

Smite is a free-to-play game, where there are certain free characters available to players, and a rotating selection of other characters available to use, or which can be unlocked via payment. The developers posted that the PS4 version will come with some exclusive character skins when the beta launches, unlocked from doing a variety of things such as linking your PS4 account with your Hi-Rez PC account, or by purchasing the Founder’s Pack.

The Smite Founder’s Pack will be available during the beta period for $29.99 on the PSN Store, and with the purchase you unlock all present and future gods in the game, 400 gems, an Ares “Soldier of Fortune” skin and immediate beta access. Again if you want to opt-in for a chance to try the beta, you can do so here. Smite has a global community of 14 million players and it is looking like things will continue to heat up once the game launches on PS4, in the near future.
