Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice – Hot or Cold?

Yesterday, my world was filled with sunshine and smiles when I heard a new Sonic game was announced. Well, that’s until I saw what was at the end of the rainbow – a sequel to Sonic Boom. As far as we know, it’s a Nintendo 3DS exclusive and it takes place in the fairly new Sonic Boom Universe, that branches off of the modern Sonic series for a fresh new take on the blue blur.

Now, we all know the first Sonic Boom game(s) weren’t received so well. By that, I mean some people said Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was worse than 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog, and that’s pretty damn bad – take my review of it with a grain of salt. The first game had a handful of bugs and glitches that make the gameplay a little meh, but I can’t imagine that SEGA hasn’t noticed this. I actually just finished telling someone on Twitter my thoughts on the new Sonic game and some could say I have false hope, but I believe Fire and Ice could be the Boom game that Rise of Lyric & Shattered Crystal meant to be.

I won’t lie. Rise of Lyric was the worst selling game in Sonic’s history and as big of a failure as it was for the first game in a new sub-series, SEGA will surely be more careful with Fire and Ice. SEGA’s even taking feedback from the first games into consideration this time around, hopfully learning from their past mistakes:

From what we’ve seen of the trailer, it seems they’ve given a little more diversity to the characters. They’ve even sped up Sonic – imagine that. Also nice to see they’ve made Amy playable, who’s actually the only main character they were missing from the last 3DS Boom game. It really doesn’t look half bad, and the music is pretty cool too. I’m not sure where exactly the whole fire and ice powers idea came from, but it seems you’re more able to get through the levels by using them. I do have to say while not being so excited for this game for the fact of how the previous game turned out, I do have faith that this time SEGA will make things right.

I’m honestly glad to see that SEGA hasn’t completely given up on Boom, the TV show’s great, but the games sure do need work. Hopefully their first failure with Boom will be their last and can learn from their mistakes to make them better from here on out. This just comes to show that when it comes to Sonic, no matter how many times SEGA will get pushed down, they’re always willing to get back up and try again.
