The Game Awards were host to a handful of announcements last night and new trailers for already announced games, but one of the bigger reveals was a franchise returning. Soulcalibur VI was unveiled with an announcement trailer, which you can watch below.
The weapon-based fighter hasn’t had a main entry since 2012 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. This will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam for PC owners in 2018. Fans of the original game will be excited to know that this entry will revisit the 16th century and the events of the original Soulcalibur. Both Mitsurugi and Sophitia are currently the only two announced fighters for the game, but there will be a cast of new and returning characters for players to fight with.
It sounds like Soulcalibur VI will also lean towards a more casual audience with simplistic controls which means “gamers of all skill levels can jump into the action and decimate the competition”, according to Mark Religioso, Brand Manager for Bandai Namco Entertainment America. I’ve always found the Soulcalibur franchise to be more casual-friendly than most fighters, and its good to see that the series will continue this tradition.
The game will also feature a new gameplay system called Reversal Edge. This will allow opponents to “clash against each other and follow-up with powerful counterattacks based on their opponent’s actions.” Online and local versus is to be expected, as well as the ability to fight AI opponents outside of the story.
