Splatoon’s Got a Release Date and Three New Amiibos

Just when Splatoon would hit store shelves been a mystery to everyone, but now Nintendo’s finally slapped a date on the colorful third-person shooter.

According to the company’s Nintendo Direct today, the game’s launching only for Wii U this May 29th, about the time Mario Kart 8 hit last year.

Left to right: an Inkling girl, a squid, and an Inkling boy.

In other news, Nintendo’s further announced that the game will indeed be among the company’s growing list of amiibo compatible games. The amiibos you see above will be available the same day the game launches and include an Inkling girl, boy, and a neon-green squid with the latter being included only via the three-pack bundle.

Each of the figurines will give players access to special missions via placing them on the Wii U gamepad, but by no means supersede the game’s core multiplayer and single-player modes.

A very special “1v1” mode, Battle Dojo, will renders two separate views for Splatoon – one player uses the GamePad as a dedicated screen while the other one uses the TV. Only the highest scoring players will win by popping balloons with ink in a stage.

Splatoon‘s among our top anticipated games of the year thus far, but is it one of yours? Tell us in the comments below if you’re itching to paint the town red – or green or blue, or whatever color, really.
