The latest Star Wars title is a base building game that is heavily inspired by the very successful Clash of Clans. In fact, Commander could almost be seen as just a Star Wars mod for Supercell’s incredibly profitable strategy MMO. Disney is hoping that by utilising one of the world’s biggest IPs, they can steal some of Clash of Clan’s 8.5 million players.
To maximise profitability, the game uses a freemium model which means that it will be stuffed with in game advertisements, social media connections and micro-transactions. The objective of Star Wars: Commander is to build up a strong base whilst sending your army to attack other players. You can chose between two factions, the Rebels or the Empire, which effects what buildings and units are available to you. Along the way you’ll interact with plenty of familiar faces and may even convince some of them to join you. However, it takes a long time to get anything done so the game encourages you to buy lots of crystals which cost real world money. The cheapest offer is 500 crystals for $5 and the most expensive is 14,000 for $100.
Star Wars: Commander is currently available for iPhone and iPad with an Android version coming at some point later.
