There has been a lot of fear over the fate of the beloved Studio Ghibli when it was mistranslated that they’d be shutting their doors. The correct comments were that they’d be “housecleaning” or “restructuring” the studio potentially for the next generation according to Ghibli General Manager Toshio Suzuki. Just to clear things up, Suzuki went on a Japanese morning show to discuss a little more about the future plans for the studio.
We’re changing the way we make (animation). … We wanted to make a dream company. We thought we would make what suited us and not make what didn’t suit us. We were able to realize (that dream) to some extent and we’re very happy about that. But now we’re at a point where we’ve got to think about what we’ll do next.
He even stated that the legendary director of the studio, Hayao Miyazaki, may return to work on something new. Since Miyazaki retired from feature films, it’s very likely he’ll compose a short similar to the little Totoro animation segment seen in the Ghibli Musuem. So while it still seems a little vague as to what’s going on with Ghibli, it doesn’t sound like they’re outright shutting down just yet.
