The Summer Game Fest has been announced today and serves as a replacement to the now-canceled E3 2020. The circumstances regarding E3’s cancellation have come from the world issues regarding the coronavirus outbreak. However, there’s not going to be a lack of gaming information this summer, thankfully.

The Summer Game Fest, in essence, is exactly what E3 would have been if that were still happening. From the creator of The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley, comes this new event series to make up for canceled conventions.

The upcoming event series has also had a host of information given, alongside its announcement. The event series has gotten a timeframe from sometime in May until the Gamescom: Opening Night Live digital event (Aug. 24th). All in all, it appears to be in a similar vein to the Game Developers Carnival that we’ve covered previously.

In addition, several major companies already have buy-ins, such as Activision, 2K, Electronic Arts, Digital Extremes, Bethesda, Valve, Square Enix, Sony Interactive Entertainment, and more. These companies will be hosting their own digital events under the Summer Game Fest brand, broadcasting to Twitch, Facebook, Mixer, Twitter, YouTube, and publishers’ own channels.

The extent of their participation has not been detailed as of this time. However, in another news release, Summer Games Fest organizers noted that Steam and Xbox will offer “playable, limited time demonstrations and trials of select game content”.

This feature is included with the program, and the Valve and Keighley-organized Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition, running June 9-14. If you remember before its cancelation, that was the week E3 2020 was planned to run.

And to top it all off, there’s a trailer that was released today as well, which you can watch below.
