Super Mario Maker Comes to 3DS on December 2nd

Super Mario Maker

Super Mario Maker was huge for the Nintendo Wii U and that makes it a no-brainer for the game to finally make its way to Nintendo’s handheld device. Nintendo announced during their newest Nintendo Direct that Nintendo 3DS players will get to enjoy the popular Mario level builder on December 2nd, 2016.

There will be 100 built-in levels and a heavy focus on local play between players. Levels will be shared by downloading from friends or through Streetpass, encouraging people to interact with other 3DS users. Wii U courses will be compatible, but not all of them, unfortunately. This is mainly due to technical restrictions I’m sure, but still a bummer nonetheless. The other noticeable downgrade is that the game will not allow users to search by course ID. Sharing and searching other courses via the internet will not be available for 3DS users. Another omission will be the mystery mushroom and its corresponding costumes.

There will be collaboratively made levels though if you so choose. You can team up with another player and help each other develop a mind-bending Mario level.

I’m still excited to get my hands on the game, especially because the touchscreen on the 3DS should lend itself greatly to creating levels. It makes sense the game would be stripped down, but it also seems like taking out online upload functionality is a major step backwards. We’ll see how the game shapes up though when its released before the end of this year.
