Lords of the Fallen wasn’t a huge release when it came out, but it also wasn’t a bad game. Hurt mainly by its overt comparisons to Dark Souls, it still managed to provide a fun, challenging time for players familiar with the type of game it was. Deck 13 Interactive had already confirmed they wouldn’t be working on the sequel to Lords of the Fallen, but instead on a new science fiction RPG entitled The Surge. The first screenshot for the game can be seen below.

(The Surge, Focus Home Interactive)

There isn’t much to see in the screenshot other than a man in an exoskeleton, similar to many science fiction projects out today. It looks like one of the unique features coming to the game – dismemberment – is on display here. Also, that is a pretty gnarly gun. A lot of the enemies for the game seem to be leaning towards mechanical, industrial creations due to the game’s setting in a dystopian future.

The upside to fighting mechanical enemies is that you will be able to upgrade your exoskeleton using the parts that you break off of an enemy. The more difficult the part is to break off, the more rewarding it will be to have equipped as the game leans into its unique upgrade system. Everything about The Surge sounds like it will be punishing but also extremely rewarding, as many enemies will be difficult, but will also provide a reward worth fighting for.

The Surge is set to be released in 2017 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
