Switch Vs. PlayStation 4: Which Console Is For You? (Maybe Neither)

ps4 v.s. switch

When it comes to making great games and gaming consoles, it’s hard to beat Japan. Both Nintendo and Sony are, after all, Japanese multinational companies. However, if you were to choose between the Nintendo Switch and the PS4, which should you choose? Ideally, you’d own both consoles because the choice of games you would have to choose from would be very different. But if you were to choose one, I’ll lay out a few pluses and minuses for both, to make your decision easier. (Spoiler: the best console may not be a console at all).

What Kind of Games Do You Like?

Zelda on the Nintendo Switch…

Nothing is a more important consideration than the actual games available when trying to choose one platform over the other. Do you like JRPGs, 2D/3D platformers, indie games and easy-to-pickup offline multiplayer games? If you don’t like any of these, then the Switch may not be for you. This doesn’t mean that the Switch is no good for big western titles though. In its very first year, it got a lot of love from Bethesda in the form of Skyrim and Doom. But as far as big budget AAA games are concerned, you will get a lot more on the PS4. However, the Switch does have absolutely brilliant games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey and they are unique games that you will not be able to play anywhere else. Then again, the PS4 has superb exclusives like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus. It all comes down to the type of games you prefer, although, you will have more choices on the PS4.

Do You Like Gaming on the Go?

Portability is one of the main reasons the Switch has sold as well as it has. That’s somewhere the PS4 just can’t compete. The tablet has a mere 720p display but it’s an absolute delight to game on it while on the move and the low resolution hardly makes a difference at only 6-inches. Besides, the hardware inside the Switch is more suited for mobile gaming than gaming on the TV. To their credit, Nintendo does give you that option via the dock though. Whether you are traveling on a plane or just resting on your bed after a long day at work, the Switch can be the perfect companion for the gamer in you.

The PlayStation 4 Is A Much More Powerful Console

PS4 Pro lacks portability but is super powerful…

Even the aging PS4 is significantly more powerful than the Switch and comparing it to the PS4 Pro would be just ridiculous. Therefore, if you plan to plug in your Switch as a home console and play it on a 1080p/4K TV, the visuals and the frame-rate will not be impressive. The Switch is a powerful mobile console, but the PS4 and the PS4 Pro are fully-fledged home consoles that are made to be played on a large screen TV.

Which One Should You Get?

In conclusion, it can be said that the Switch should be treated as an auxiliary console, rather than the main gaming device you own. If you have the budget for just one and you don’t have a powerful PC or a PlayStation or even an Xbox at home already, you should go for the PlayStation 4 (preferably the Pro) because it would be the better investment. On the other hand, if you love the concept of playing a select set of well customized and superb games anywhere you like, rather than having to always sit in front of the TV to play your favorite games, the Nintendo Switch is definitely worth it.

What If consoles Aren’t Good Enough?

Build your own gaming beast…

By now, you have probably figured out which console is the right one for you and that’s the whole point. However, if you really want to experience games at their best (namely in 4K at 60fps) and you have the budget to build a gaming PC for that, head over to GPU Nerd because they have all the resources, information, and guidance that you will ever need to build that super-powered custom gaming PC all by yourself and without overshooting your budget.

While consoles do have a number of advantages over PC’s, the right Windows 10 PC will outclass every console out there, and that’s an unavoidable fact.

If you don’t already own a PS4 or Nintendo Switch, which do you think would suit you better? Do you agree PC’s may be the best option overall? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!
