The retro-inspired turn-based RPG filled with cute kitties is available now on Steam, Nuuvem, and the Humble Store. Developed by Hamstercube and published by Fat Dog Games, The Chronicles of Nyanya is a pixel art role-playing game centered around delivering traditional turn-based combat and humorous dialogue. The protagonist and meowsassin, Catair (no that’s not the extent of the game’s puns), is a pessimist of sorts. In stereotypical anime/JRPG fashion, he witnessed his village’s massacre as a child. Story progress can be altered with three endings influenced by an underlying friendship system. This friendship system also has the potential to change gameplay.
Hamstercube is proud of their script, which they claim consists of over 113,000 words. By contrast, the novel The Hobbit comes in at just over 95,000 words. Most of the script is packed with what the developer describes as “hilarious meme jokes, ironic comments, and fun pop culture references”. With a roughly twenty hour play time and its multiple endings, The Chronicles of Nyanya is designed to be played more than once by everybody.
The Chronicles of Nyanya is Hamstercube’s first game, with Fat Dog Games having also published Indygo (also playable in VR), Inner Voices, and Rawr-off. Their current plans involve publishing over twenty games per year with a specialization in international markets across Steam, Mobile, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
