Many people believe Sonic’s first movie was 2019’s live-action adaptation. However, most Sonic fans would quickly leap into action stating that is incorrect. They would point to Sonic OVA. A animated movie released in 1999 in America and dubbed by ADV Films. The OVA at the time received mostly positive reviews, so I grabbed my compadres and watched it for the first time. However, we decided it would be fun to record our reactions and thoughts as we viewed it.
Sonic OVA doesn’t take place in the same world as the video games, comics, or other Sonic medias. The animated film takes place in a world that is split into two: The Land of the Sky and The Land of Darkness. That’s not the only addition they made; there are new characters introduce exclusively for the OVA. Despite the changes and additions; the OVA still contains the spirit of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic and his pals are once again at odds with the nefarious Dr. Eggman (or Dr. Ivo Robotnick). As he schemes a new diabolical plan to stop Sonic right in his tracks. Does he succeed?
