FUNimation announced today that they have purchased the rights for the memorable animated film: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time directed by Mamoru Hosoda. The company plans on giving this special movie a home release this summer to coincide with the film’s 10th anniversary. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a groundbreaking film because it was the first time an original animated movie was not connected to a previous anime episodic TV series.
A high school girl Makoto Konno wakes up late for her classes and ends up fumbling her assignments from a quiz to accidentally starting a fire in her cooking class that day. On her way home her bicycle’s brakes won’t stop her bike in time and she collides into a train. In this moment a secret ability triggers and Makoto leaps back through time. With her new special power she re-takes tests and assignments and relives embarrassing moments to fix them. Like every other person who would have discovered this ability, Makoto does all these leaps without thinking there can be any side effects. Unfortunately, leaping backwards through time to altar her history has begun to negatively impact the people round her. Now she only has a limited number of leaps to set time back on the right path before her actions and altered time lasts forever.
FUNimation will post The Girl Who Leapt Through Time pre-ordering information on their website in the near future.
