One of the biggest announcements this past week was that the Xbox One would finally be getting back-compatibility with Xbox 360 games. Gamers have wondered whether the Playstation 4 could do the same in light of the news. According to Sony, that’s just not going to happen anytime soon.

“PS3 is such a unique architecture, and some games made use of SPUs very well,” Yoshida commented. “It’s going to be super challenging to do so. I never say never, but we have no plans.”

The PS3’s SPUs, the Cell processor, is allegedly archaic to the PS4’s more modern CPU processors. As a result, it could prove difficult to move PS3 games to PS4 natively – or via your own PS3 game discs, as it were.

Yoshida expressed his surprise at Microsoft’s announcement of back-compatibility from one generation of Xbox to another, meanwhile.

“I didn’t think it was possible,” Yoshida said. ‘There must be lots of engineering effort. They talked about 100 games, but what kind of games will be included? Is it smaller games or big games? We don’t know.”

From this E3, we know for sure that your 360 copy of Mass Effect will work on your Xbox One and Microsoft will reportedly be porting at least “a hundred” 360 games to Xbox One by this holiday followed by at least a “hundred more.”
