According to a report by AllThingsD, Twitter could end up being in direct competition with popular message client WhatsApp by releasing a standalone messaging app of its own.

Several sources close to Twitter revealed that it has been playing close attention to Snapchat for quite some time, even going so far as to privately meet several employees from MessageMe. In order to assess Snapchat’s impact, Twitter ran an internal survey, and at this point, it could be a matter of when rather than if.

Since this is only a rumor, though, take all of this with a grain of salt. Regardless, we will keep you updated on if Twitter decides to make this move. Considering it will go public very soon on the New York Stock Exchange, this would be a nice bowtie to the suit.
