The Office of Fair Trading has announced that it will launch a public survey to delve deeper into the murky waters that are in-app purchased which will be aimed at parents/guardians whose children play web and app-based titles which encourage the user to pay real money for additional in-game items.

This investigation’s aim is to simply find whether games which do feature in-app purchases are “misleading, commercially aggressive or otherwise unfair” and has a deadline of Friday 28th June 2013, so we should be hearing about the findings soon enough.

Commenting on the investigation, senior director of the Office of Fair Trading, Cavendish Elithron explained;
“We are concerned that children and their parents could be subject to unfair pressure to purchase when they are playing games they thought were free, but which can actually run up substantial costs.”
