Cancel, cancel, delay, delay… Yes, this is a big year of hearing these very words from the mouths of everyone from CEOs to sporting leagues, events organizers, to schools. Valve delayed their third annual Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition, pushing the start date back from June 7th to June 16th instead.
Was the reason behind the delays COVID-19, like so many other events we’ve had canceled and delayed this year? Although highly unlikely, some publications have suggested that the reasoning may be due to the Black Lives Matter movement, protests, and unrest that was reaching new heights at the start of June. Support from other multi-national companies to the campaign came in the form of cancellations, social media messaging, and the like.
The Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition is a chance for players to get their hands on over 900 playable demos, watch and participate in live streams with developers, see game playthroughs, and check out other developer spotlight events. The event usually coincided with E3, the world’s biggest gaming exhibition.
Perhaps there isn’t a more globally pressing issue behind the delay of the festival, perhaps the content just wasn’t all quite there yet. Will we ever know the real reason? It’s unlikely since no one has come forward to give us an answer. Regardless of why the delay occurred, the event has now wrapped up, with plenty of players getting a chance to check out games for a limited time in demo form. The Steam Summer Sale wraps up on July 9 at 10 am.
