Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed that Ubisoft will only be making family friendly games for the Wii U for the foreseeable future. Their final mature game for the platform will be Watch Dogs. In an interview with Game Informer, Guillemot said that ”[Watch Dogs] is coming to Wii U… It will be the only mature game we publish on it. What we see is that Nintendo customers don’t buy Assassin’s Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers. They are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of games. So what we are trying to do is to focus more on the types of games they are interested in.”
At the beginning of the generation, Ubisoft invested quite strongly( at least in comparison to other third parties) into mature titles for the Wii U. Not only did they have the new IP Zombie U for launch but they also released Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Splinter Cell: Blacklist. However, the gamble does not seem to have paid off. Last year, Wii U game sales represented only 4% of Ubisoft’s total. This year that figure dropped to 3%.
Watch Dogs first launched in May but the Wii U version still does not have a release date.
