This Week on Blu-Ray: August 9th 2016

Welcome to another installment of This Week On Blu-Ray, where I tell you what the big releases are and whether they’re worth getting. I’ll give it to you guys straight, this week’s releases really suck. If you want your DC comics media a little brighter, you can pick up the first season of Supergirl. You can watch all 880 minutes of the former CBS series before it premieres on the CW later this year and why wouldn’t you want to do that? Unfortunately, that show just doesn’t seem to be my thing and critical reception hasn’t proven me otherwise.

Next up is the James Franco-starring time travel miniseries, 11.22.63. Based on the acclaimed best-seller by Stephen King, the story revolves around a man that goes back in time to prevent the assassination of president John F. Kennedy. Co-starring Chris Cooper and Sarah Gadon, this Hulu miniseries sounds interesting, but perhaps it’s better as an over-bloated page turner or as I like to call it, a Stephen King novel.

(Scooby Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon, Warner Bros)

What should be your highest anticipated release of the week is Scooby Doo! and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon. In this release, the detectives must race against their opponent, The Inferno, with their new racing partner, The Undertaker. Any series that features a scene like this needs to continue. In other words, what the hell are you waiting for?

If you need your monthly dose of body horror, make sure to pick up Tom Tykwer’s latest film, A Hologram for the KingStarring Tom Hanks, Hologram features a Tom Hanks-esque character roaming through Saudi Arabia to make a deal with, you guessed it, the King. You can hear Christopher Cross and I talk about it here, but to sum it all up, it’s not among Tykwer’s finest, but it’s a sweet little film that we will welcome with open arms, even if we’re a little disappointed after his epic collaboration with the Wachowskis on Cloud Atlas.

Well that is This Week on Blu-ray. Make sure to check in next week when I remind you that Once Upon a Time is still a TV show that’s on the air and The Criterion Collection is still releasing movies. Until next time…
