This Week in Games: South Park Wrestles Gran Turismo Sport

South Park: The Fractured but Whole

Welcome to a new weekly round-up on what games are coming out this week. This Week in Games highlights those titles we’re most excited for, regardless of platform. This week, we have a hell of a line-up for games that people have waited a while to finally play. From delays to just being franchises known for long waits, there is something for everyone who didn’t already pick up The Evil Within 2 or Middle-earth: Shadow of War last week.

To start things off, the sequel to 2014’s surprise hit adaptation, South Park: The Stick of Truth, is finally being released this week. South Park: The Fractured But Whole (that title never gets old) was originally slated to be released in December of 2016, but was pushed to Q1 2017 and then pushed to sometime before March 2018. The game finally comes out on October 17th for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Expect lots of controversy when the game comes out as it is already receiving traction due to its difficulty settings being based on player’s race, and the first game was met with a lot of response due to some of the more insane quests you partook in.

The other huge release is Gran Turismo Sport. This is the first game in the long-running Gran Turismo franchise to grace the PlayStation 4 and will feature VR support that will be available in a special “VR Tour mode”. For fans of the series worried that Sport is just a spin-off from the main franchise, Kazunori Yamauchi (creator of the series) has stated on record that he believes the game is part of the primary numbered entries. So while it may not actually be numbered, Sport is intended to act as the next generation in the racing franchise and not as an outlier. Gran Turismo Sport launches on October 17th for PS4.

(Fire Emblem Warriors, Nintendo)

Nintendo Switch owners have been having a great time with their consoles by all accounts, and this week sees the release of a beloved Nintendo franchise on the console. Fire Emblem Warriors is coming to both the Switch and the New Nintendo 3DS, and is developed by Omega Force, Team Ninja, and Intelligent Systems. The game will follow more in line with the hack-and-slash combat of Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors franchise but with the added tactical commands of Intelligent Systems’ Fire Emblem series. Much like Hyrule Warriors, this seems like the perfect game for those who want to play a different take on the well-established franchise and get lost in the world of Fire Emblem. Plus, it has amiibo support for all current and future Fire Emblem amiibos! It releases on October 20th.

Wrestling fans get the annual treatment of being able to smash their friends’ faces in with WWE 2K18. Seth Rollins graces this year’s cover art, and the game is set to be the first to be on a Nintendo platform under the WWE 2K banner. It’s being developed by Yuke’s and Visual Concepts, and will feature revamped Royal Rumble mechanics, a new Carry system, as well as the largest roster the series has had at launch. While the WWE games have had a shaky history, this one sounds very promising. WWE 2K18 will launch on October 17th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch version being released sometime this fall.

There’s a remaster of Age of Empires coming out too? Even RTS fans get something this week! Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will look and sound better than it ever did before with updated graphics, sound effects, and music. It releases on October 19th for PC.

(The Inner World: The Last Wind Monk, Headup Games)

In terms of lesser known titles, adventure game fans can play through The Inner World: The Last Wind Monk on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Mac on October 20th. The sequel to 2013’s The Inner World features the same quirky attitude and beautiful hand-drawn art style that made the point-and-click adventure a success. THQ Nordic will be releasing the sci-fi/fantasy action-RPG Elex for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 17th, developed by Piranha Bytes. Sci-fi and Fantasy are still such an interesting mix of genres, so I’m personally excited to see how the two meld in this. Then finally, Rogue Trooper Redux will be hitting PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 17th. In 2006, the original Rogue Trooper was released based on a science fiction comic strip and now you can play an updated version of the same game with new gameplay mechanics.
