Publisher and developer CD Projekt RED has announced that The Witcher series of games has sold over 5 million copies.
Based on the short stories and novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, the series consists of two games to date: The Witcher, which appeared on PC in 2007, and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which was released on PC in 2011 and Xbox 360 in 2012.
The series is set to continue on PC and next-generation consoles with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as recently announced by CD Projekt RED, who added that the third game is also intended to be the “final chapter in the legend” of series star Geralt of Rivia, but not the final game in the series as a whole.
Speaking of the upcoming third game and of the sales milestone achieved by the first two games, Adam Kicinski, CEO of CD PROJEKT, said, “The Witcher 3 will be a crowning achievement for the RPG genre, but I am also proud to announce that the number of previous Witcher games sold has surpassed 5 million copies. This is great news, especially since the 2012 debuted console debut on the Xbox 360 contributed largely to this result, receiving great feedback from gamers and critics. The Witcher 2 is already a classic RPG.”
