Perhaps one of the most famous roleplaying games in the Nintendo DS library is getting remastered and brought to the Nintendo Switch. The World Ends With You: Final Remix was announced today during the surprise Nintendo Direct Mini and gameplay of the game was shown off. The game looks as stylized as ever, and looks incredibly slick for the Switch.
The World Ends With You was originally released on the Nintendo DS in 2017. The game takes place in Shibuya, and follows the adventures of Neku and his pals as they fight in a world split between the land of the living and the dead in an intriguing futuristic game setting. As Neku fights through the Reaper’s Game, the game is split up into a few chapters and is full of stylistic designs courtesy of Tetsuya Nomura, known for his work on Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy, and great combat. The game utilized the dual screens of the DS, and filled both with characters and information as well as using the touchscreen in-game. The game on the Switch will be playable with traditional controls and with touchscreen controls, so you’ll be able to play on your tv or on the go easily.
An important thing to note is that The World Ends With You: Final Remix will also include a sizeable new scenario, offering up some more tasty story to an already meaty action-RPG. Square Enix have stated that they were planning on supporting the Switch this year, and with Lost Sphear already on the way, I would expect even more news from Square Enix soon enough.
The World Ends With You has gained a great deal of notoriety over the years as one of Square Enix’s most stylish and original role-playing games, so it’s great that they are releasing an updated HD version of the game in 2018. Hopefully this is a lead-off to a true sequel to the game, and someday we will be visiting Shibuya and the Reaper’s Game in full-on 3d. Well, we can dream right?
