World of Warcraft Roleplaying for Beginners

World of Warcraft

(World of Warcraft, Blizzard)

Everyone has to start somewhere, it’s the truth. No-one can know it all to start off with, whether it be with gaming, work…anything! In WOW, there is an aspect of the game specifically aimed at “being your character.” Now when you create a character, you also choose a Realm. This is a very important part of the process, henceforth you have to choose one with the future in mind. If you want to roleplay, you must abide by roleplaying rules in roleplaying servers.

You have created a character, with a roleplaying name hopefully, “imaroleplayer” though its too big to fit on the character creation screen, it’s also a bad roleplaying name, so is something like, “LightPriest” you get the jist, don’t say what you are by your name! In roleplay, you can’t read other peoples names, so pretend not to know them.

Make sure you have roleplaying gear. A barman would not dress in armor. Never wear a weapon or armor when roleplaying.

Grammatical Correction

To be a good role player, your grammar must be good. Put capital letters and full stop in you sentences, talk as you would in real life, don’t use shorthand like “LOL” Walk as you would unreal life, don’t run around. Boring, yes but it has to be done to be popular in the role playing community.

Make a character backstory. People need to know where you are from, where you live, what you do, what jobs you have had…does your character have an accent, drink a lot, have special powers? Ths is what people ask so be ready for these questions.

Now, lets craete a checklist for our character.

These are the basic first things to consider when creating a new RP character. There are more in depth things to consider, for example the character’s accent and special abilities. Your class will help with this, for example, if you are joining an army as a priest, you are going to be a healer. They won’t let you join as a front line soldier, so don’t try to make them.

RP Example

You have gone to an interview to join the local army regiment. This is what a good RP session would sound like. Notice the capital letters and full stops in every sentence. These are important in RP. If you misspell a word, say something like this, ” Hello, wlcome to the fort.” “Welcome, even” make it out as if you have said it wrong and correct yourself. To emote an action that is not on the emotes list, put * Picks his nose.*

You: Hello, I am here for the interview to join your ranks.

Commander: Ah, hello there. Please, take a seat. *Takes out a quill and some parchment from the draw.* Now, what is your name please?

You: Tholm Barrowmore

Commander: How old are you, Tholm? Where do you live?

You: I am twenty years old and I live in Stormwind. I have lived there all my life. My family own the baker’s shop and I help them run it when they need a break.

ETC

Let’s start a real story now. You have arrived in Stormwind and you have a look around at the shops, auctions, store your money away and meet the owner of the tavern in the Dwarven District who is ill and wants you to take over the tavern. He just so happens to be your uncle and knew you since you were a child. You sit down and have a few pints, on the house of course and you start talking. After a few drinks, you decide it’s time to see how it’s sone and your uncle shows you how to pull a pint.

Months later

The regulars are coming in at 19:00 and ordering, sitting down with friends and having a friendly social evening. the local fisherman and his crew, the suspicious guard who everyone knows is up to no good but have no proof. No-one really seems to care anyway. You stand behind the bar taking orders and your waiters are all walking round tables asking if anyone would like anything more. This is bliss…
