President of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, says he has adopted a “never say never” attitude towards the SOCOM series. The series itself has fallen under harsh circumstances after the closure of its developer Zipper Interactive, as well as the merely lukewarm reviews SOCOM 4 received.
During an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Shuhei said “It’s not done. We never definitely retire any franchise. It’s sometimes great to have a fresh look at the classics that we have,” in regards to the series.
He also compared the future of the SOCOM series to the newly revised Sly Cooper series:
“We are launching a new Sly Cooper game this year after so many years. Never say never. I feel sorry for the people who are long-time SOCOM fans, and there are many people who still play SOCOM 1 and SOCOM 2 especially, those seem to be their favorites.”
Yoshida finalized his statements by pointing out the waning popularity of SOCOM in the seventh console generation, as well as his belief that an HD remake of the widely popular PlayStation 2 titles would prove worthwhile.
