Zack Snyder just can’t get away from the criticisms of decisions he made in his Superman reboot, Man of Steel. With the hero snapping the neck of General Zod at the end of the aforementioned film, fans have been upset to say the least, about his decisions and the reckless destruction during the climactic moments. He has done damage control beforehand saying “I was surprised because that’s the thesis of Superman for me, that you can’t just have superheroes knock around and have there be no consequences,” during last year’s Comic-Con.

Now he’s back on the defensive before Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is released in March. During the latest Hall of Justice podcast, Snyder went on to say that “people are always like ‘You changed Superman.’ If you’re a comic book fan, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you know the true canon, you know that I didn’t change Superman. If you’re a fan of the old movies, yeah, I changed him a bit. My point is that we don’t take liberties [from the characters’ comic origins]…what we’ve done is create a place where they can really be the mythological characters as designed in the comic books.”

Whether or not his statements are enough to soothe the fans of the character are up for debate, but the mythology he’s carved in his film is certainly unique compared to past representations in film. His “true canon” comment will likely ruffle some feathers. While you parse through your opinions, look for his follow-up, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, in theaters March 25th, 2016.
