Wii U launch title ZombiU seems to have chosen to eschew the hand-holding nature of many modern video games and instead present the player with a real challenge, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the game’s Survival mode – just ask the developers.

“There were lots of times when the staff working on the development of the game were killed because they let their concentration slip for just a split second”, stated Ubisoft producer Guillaume Brunier in a recent edition of Iwata Asks.

“It must have been only two or three days before we finished work on the game before anyone made it all the way to the end,” added Xavier Poix, managing director of Ubisoft France.

The game’s Survival mode sees players granted with one life – lose it, and it’s game over. Although the developer at one time believed the mode might not even be possible, Guillaume stated the team “made fine adjustments to ensure it was fair to you, so if a player loses a life, they only have themselves to blame.”

The first player to complete Survival mode will have their achievement listed on ZombiU‘s online leaderboards for the world to bask in their undead-battling glory. ZombiU is available in the US now and releases in Australia and the UK on 30th November.
